Walk into Buenos Aires
Plaza San Martín is the natural first stop. From there the city centre unfolds along Florida and the wide avenues toward the Obelisk, with theatres, galleries, bookshops and long-standing restaurants on the way.
The Teatro Colón is close enough for an evening performance without planning transport around it, which is rarer in a city this size than it sounds. Dinner afterwards is a walk rather than a taxi queue, and the evening keeps its shape.
Walking north-west leads into Recoleta, with its cemetery, cultural centre and museums, while the riverside developments of Puerto Madero lie in the other direction. The city's official tourism service keeps current listings for exhibitions and events, which is the most reliable way to plan an evening in advance rather than on the night.
